Position: Artistic Director/Executive Director (with Mentorship Opportunity*)

The Bella Coola Music Festival seeks an engaging and visionary Artistic and Executive Director who wants to enhance the artistic and organizational excellence of one of the most celebrated annual events in the Bella Coola Valley. Our 20+ year old non-profit organization with grass-roots and indigenous spirit offers plenty of opportunity for experience, growth and autonomy. Reporting to Board of Directors and working closely with our volunteer coordinators, the Artistic/Executive Director will be responsible for the overall management and supervision of Bella Coola Music Festival’s operations. They will also further develop the Festival’s artistic vision and will play a key role in fundraising and strategic planning.

The position has four primary areas of focus:

Planning and Production – focuses on creating excellent production and artist communications. Includes: preparing, managing, and implementing all artist and production contracts; overseeing productions to meet artist, audience, and organization needs; creating and communicating production schedules; liaising with the Board of Directors and Volunteer Coordinators to communicate budgets, technical, and production requirements; managing artist database.

Financial – focuses on managing robust financial reporting with an eye to both day-to-day and long-term operations. Includes: preparing, managing, and implementing a +/-$100K operating budget in collaboration with the Board Treasurer and Financial Manager; preparation of grants, and final reporting; overseeing budgets, and projections for grants and final reports; securing corporate sponsorship, ensuring that the organization remains compliant with all CRA, the Society Act, and other regulations; overseeing the review engagement or audit process with an independent accounting firm; supporting and executing fundraising efforts for the organization.

Administration and Operations – focuses on maintaining general operations. Includes: arranging and attending board and committee meetings; providing vision for and alignment with the Bella Coola Music Festival; preparing, managing, and implementing service contracts; supervising several volunteers and contractor positions.
Community Outreach and Coordination – focuses on establishing and maintaining productive and mutually respectful relationships with community organizations, individuals and businesses including: Nuxalk Nation, Nuxalk Development Corporation, SD49 and Acwsaltca Schools, Nuxalk Radio, Bella Coola Valley Learning Society, Bella Coola Community Support Society, local artists and more.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated experience in artistic budget oversight and administration
• Strong leader with the ability to inspire other through their persuasive articulation of the BCMF’s mission and vision
• Community-minded and inclusive thinker; focused on creating positive connections in the Valley
• Arts-related field of study or combination of work experience
• Experience as a professional artist and/or artistic administrator in the performing arts industry
• Familiarity with a network of professional performing artist
• Excellent public speaking and written communication skills
• Ability to supervise and interact with artistic staff with a positive, teamwork approach
• Willingness to work extended hours and perform expanded tasks during the Festival season

Compensation

This is a year-round part-time contract position with compensation based on experience.

*Mentorship Opportunity – The incumbent will be a mentee under our current Artistic/Executive Director, for a minimum of a full year with production of the Festival, to ensure adequate training and consistency with continuing operations.
